An Alternative to New Year's Resolutions

Richard Loebl, LCSW, PA

2012

"My New Year's resolution is to go on a diet, and lose 20 pounds and quit drinking."  Right. How many times have you heard that one? How many times have you said something like that yourself? Most people know that New Year's resolutions don't work. Quite a few studies have shown that these resolutions fail more often than not. Why is that? And is there another approach that works better?

There are many reasons why our resolutions become disillusions. I believe the reasons can be grouped together in 3 major categories: Read More

Put Down The Phone

Dr. Alison Tarlow

As Interviewed by Cassie Morien in Boca Magazine

Richard

In our current "20 Ways to Change Your Life" feature, we suggested taking time each week (or day) to unplug from technology. We interviewed licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Alison Tarlow on why it is important to take a break from your iPhones and iPads and notice the people around you.

How would you describe society's current relationship with technology?

Society's current relationship with technology borders on the obsession- many people eagerly await the latest version of a cell phone or PDA, and want to keep up with the latest programs to keep us connected with each other. Read More

Loving The Child Within

Dana Risucci, LCSW

Dana & Poo

Somewhere inside of all of us there is an innocent carefree child. This little child is loving, creative, spontaneous and has an imagination to express oneself. This little child existed before childhood abuse or neglect, adulthood, responsibilities, and bills. It is important for all of us to continue to nurture and cultivate this inner child within. I believe that our inner child comes out when we are feeling joy, peace, laughter, and freedom to make our goals and dreams a reality. Read More

Time For You

Dr. Linda J. Visaggi, LCSW

As the time of year for visiting family and friends, attending parties, shopping at many stores, finding a parking space when none exists, decorating, making reservations, going out of town, and trying to get just the right gift for our loved ones concludes - here are 10 ways to relax.

The Catnap

Take a short break to recharge your batteries.

Visualization

This method requires a little training, but can be used by nearly everyone after some practice. You use your mind's eye, your imagination, for a quick break. When the pressure's building up, close your eyes and imagine you are at one of your favorite places, parks, or vacation spots. Read More

Jump Into The New Year With a

Positive Mindset

Sabrina Braisin, LCSW

A positive mindset is like a muscle that must be developed every day at what I call the inner gym. It's not easy at first, but with time and practice becomes more natural. Typically, if someone has never lifted weights, they do not begin with 100 pounds, but build up their muscle strength to get there. It's never too late to start and what a great time as we begin a new year!

Once I began attending the gym (starting with 10 pound weights), I also noticed positive results happening in my inner gym. With the support and inspiration of my athletic friend, I began a life changing path. My biggest
challenge, a box jump, created a paradigm shift Read More

Post-Holiday Mindful Stress Reliever

Dorie Porcelli, LMHC

lotusAfter the pace of increased holiday activities slow down, we can take a breathing space to bring us back to the present instead of what may be on our stress list of must do's.

Step #1 - Take a moment to notice what is happening in your experience such as feeling stressed, feeling tired, feeling confused, etc.  Try to name the feeling or describe the situation that is causing these feelings such as, "I'm exhausted and burnt out from the holidays." Read More

Director's Notes
Richard Loebl, LCSW, PA

Happy New Year from all of us at the Relationship Center of South Florida. We hope the New Year brings you joy, abundance and healthy, happy relationships with all your loved ones.

2011 was an exciting year of growth at our Center. We welcomed 2 new therapists, Sabrina Braisin and Dorie Porcelli. Sabrina, our newsletter editor and Director of Marketing, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specializing in women's issues, relationship therapy, and family consultation. Dorie is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor specializing in mindfulness based cognitive therapy, anxiety, depression, grief work, and end of life care. We now have 8 licensed therapists and counselors practicing at our Center, in addition to Lisa Delaney, a Licensed Nutritionist who specializes in eating disorders and nutritional aspects of chronic disease.

Dr Alison Tarlow, an eating disorder specialist who also runs codependency groups at Wellness Resource Center, recently was featured in Boca Raton Magazine. She addressed ways in which people can "power down" from their mobile and electronic devices and focus more on their one-on-one in-person interactions and spend more quality time with loved ones in the new year. The article is found on page 133 of the December/January edition of Boca Raton Magazine in a feature entitled "20 Ways to Simplify Your Life" and also appears in this newsletter.  Read More
